The orphaned night

I gave the night back to the day
Just moments before it rode away
In filtered light with chilling winds
I knew it would come around again
I witnessed comets, moon and stars
But the day was never far
It did not thank me for the night
It frowned down upon my generosity
And gave the night right back to me
