Within the whale

I wrote you a letter and put a cork in it
I think it must be in the belly of a whale
One bright calm day he will die on your beach and the birds will pick his flesh
In time the only thing remaining will be his bones and the bottle full of my words
Your blue dress will tear on a broken rib as you lean over to retrieve it
My world will stop when you pop the cork
I will sink down
I will become your buried treasure
Deep ,deep down in the earth
You will come with picks and shovels
While the sun bleaches a giant jawbone
And little waves lap upon the shore

MY HEROES OF GRAVITY

My heroes of gravity
Release me from the pull of the earth
Just long enough to ease my pain
And draw down the shine of stars
Their power is limited and relative
And mined  from my own heart
They give freely because it cost them nothing
I find them haunting bars of music and lines of poetry
These ghosts
My heroes of gravity

Eat it too

Nations fall off the earth like cheap plastic decorations  on dry icing

Chocolate
The kind that hurts the pit of your stomach – not homemade

To keep warm out in space the people huddle around one of the candles
that flings hot wax on stars and asteroids as they hurdle through space on a metaphor for insignificance

Someone digs a hole and lowers a platform with picks and chisels to harvest the icing

Suddenly the candle goes out
They sit in the cold darkness holding their stomachs ,rocking back and forth in a way that mimics the tides and rhythms of life they left behind

Wind of seeds

A seed wind blew out of the north
Seeds stuck into my skin
They pushed me down to the earth
And sprouted roots in my veins
Each soft, supple root encircled my heart
Cornlike auburn  plants pushed up from my flesh
On the underside of their leaves tiny white hairs rose and fell with my pulse
I never felt more wanted
I never slept so well
